Melissa Sommer Segers

I live in sunny Denver, Colorado with my husband and children, but grew up at Clearwater as one of the youngest campers ever (I spent my very first summer of life at Clearwater!) since my Grandma Sunny was the Director and my mother, Marcia Dunaway was Assistant Director. I was an “official” camper most summers from 1986 to 1995.

I moved out to Denver as an AmeriCorps volunteer after graduating from Duke University, following my Grandmother and Mother’s footsteps. After working as a paralegal for several years, I went to law school at the University of Colorado.  I’ve made a career of indigent criminal defense, working as a Public Defender in Denver for 6 years, before going into private practice. I now represent many clients who have a conflict with the public defender, but who are still entitled to indigent defense.

The best part of me is my two children, who are 8 and 5. During the summer, my son attends Cheley Camp in Colorado and my daughter hopes to be a future Clearwater Daughter! I believe serving on the Board is both a responsibility and a privilege to help carry on my Grandma and Mother’s devotion to Clearwater.
